Organising your kitchen pantry might be a task you have been putting off for a while. Our simple tips will motivate you to take on this task over an afternoon.

Organising can save you money; save you time, and create better shopping and eating habits. Read below for tips.

  1. Declutter – If You Don’t Use it, Lose It

Start by emptying everything out, and seeing what you have. Look for duplicates, expiration dates, empty packets and one off purchases. Evaluate what you like and don’t like, ask yourself if everything is a necessary item you need and through out spoiled food. This will create more space for items you do want to keep.

  1. Organise

Firstly, wipe clean storage area to start with a clean area. A common error is to organise by size rather than group. But, grouping is far more effective, making it easier to locate items.

Common groups include:

  • Cans of beans and soup
  • Bottles of vinegar and oils
  • Bags or boxes of snack food
  • Jars of spices
  • Boxes of cereal, rice and pasta
  1. Arrangement and Storage

Arrange items similarly to that of a supermarket. The most used items should be at eye level for easy access and items that are not used as much on either higher or lower shelves.

If you have children, consider their eye-level and most used items. Make it easy to reach for them and store items in plastic containers with labels or bags, to avoid them breaking anything.

If you have high or deep storage areas, consider using a spice rake or plastic containers that maximise shelf height.

  1. First In, First Out

Look at expiry dates and continuously rearrange stock so that older items are at the front of shelves to be seen and used first. While, newer items are kept behind these.

  1. Repeat

On a weekly basis new groceries are bought and stored in the kitchen pantry. Remember to consciously think about you storage space while shopping to avoid over buying or bulk buying. Once a month regroup items to maintain an organised area. Every season should be an opportunity to declutter, rearrange storage and regroup items.

Using these tips will ensure your kitchen pantry will be clean, save you time and keep everything organised. You can also make many storage decisions when designing your kitchen to keep it decluttered.
