Kitchen Splashbacks

Kitchen splashbacks protect the kitchen wall from oil, grease and other “splashes” that may arise when cooking or preparing food.

A popular choice is to continue the bench material up the wall and use it as the kitchen splashback material. This helps maintain the continuity of the kitchen design and keeps the number of material choices in the kitchen to a minimum.

Kitchen splashbacks can add character and dimension to your new kitchen and are a popular aesthetic feature to any new kitchen design. Popular materials often chosen as kitchen splashbacks include coloured glass, toughened mirror, stone, tiles and stainless steel.

Each kitchen splashback material has its own unique quality. Choosing the right kitchen splashback material for your kitchen is dependent on your own personal preference and new kitchen style. Tiles are a popular material choice for kitchen splashbacks and rightly so due to their interesting appearance and cost-effective nature. Kitchen splashback tiles are able to add character and dimension to your new kitchen and are available in many different shapes, sizes and colours.

Kitchen Splashback Know-How: What Homeowners Ask Us Most

What is the best kitchen splashback?

With a range of kitchen splashback options, it depends on your style, budget, and how you use your kitchen. Here are some popular options:

  • Glass: This choice is sleek, modern, easy to clean, and can handle heat well.
  • Porcelain or Ceramic Tiles: These are affordable, come in many styles, and are durable.
  • Crystalline, Silica Free: This option is seamless and matches your benchtops.
  • Stainless Steel: Great for modern or industrial kitchens; it’s very durable.
  • Acrylic or Laminate Panels: These are budget-friendly and available in many colours and patterns.
  • Mirrored Splashback: This option makes your kitchen feel more spacious. It’s easy to clean but can show fingerprints and smudges.
  • Pressed Metal Splashback: Ideal for an industrial or vintage look. It’s durable and easy to maintain, but the finish may need periodic cleaning to maintain its appearance.

What is the best option for a kitchen splashback?

Glass and tiled wall panels are popular choices because they’re durable, stylish, and easy to clean. Glass offers a sleek, modern look with minimal maintenance. While tiles, especially large-format or classic subway tiles—provide timeless appeal and design flexibility. For a seamless, high-end finish, an engineered stone that matches your benchtops is also a great option.

What is the easiest splashback to maintain?

A benchtop return that extends the same material, like stone or laminate, up the wall is easy to clean and maintain, making it a modern and practical choice. These seamless designs have no grout lines, so there are fewer places for grease or grime to build up.

Toughened glass is a low-maintenance option that’s easy to clean with glass cleaner. Acrylic panels offer a similar smooth finish but aren’t as heat-resistant.

If you prefer tiles, we recommend you choose large-format porcelain or ceramic tiles to reduce grout lines. In general, avoiding small tiles with lots of grout will save time and effort when it comes to cleaning.

Can you put a kitchen splashback over the tiles?

Yes! You can install a new splashback over existing tiles if the tiles are flat, clean, and in good condition. You can use materials like glass, acrylic, or laminate and stick them directly over the old tiles with the right adhesive. Alternatively, you can tile over the old tiles, but this will make everything thicker and could affect power outlets, fittings, or how your cabinetry lines up.

How high should your kitchen splashback be?

In Australian kitchens, the standard height for a splashback is 600mm from the benchtop to the bottom of the overhead cabinets. Full-height splashbacks, made from materials like glass or stone, can go up to 700mm to 900mm, depending on the ceiling height and design choices. Behind a cooktop or rangehood, it is common to extend the splashback to the rangehood or all the way to the ceiling for a clean, modern look.

What can I use as a splashback in my kitchen?

There are many kitchen splashback ideas you can add to your kitchen design, each offering a unique look and level of maintenance. Popular options include ceramic or porcelain tiles, painted or mirrored glass, acrylic or laminate panels, natural or engineered stone, stainless steel, and pressed metal. Each material has its pros and cons, so the best choice depends on your budget, kitchen style, and how easy you want it to be to clean.
