There’s nothing worse than running back and forth between your indoor and outdoor kitchen when you have guests over, by the time you get to sit down and relax, the party is almost finished. This can be avoided if you design your outdoor kitchen so it can function like your indoor kitchen. This does not mean it has to be massive, or have every top of the line appliance, it just means you design your outdoor kitchen to have everything you need when cooking outside.

Make sure your outdoor kitchen has the four essential spaces; prep, cook, serve and clean. This makes it easy for you to do everything outside. If you don’t have the room outside to have lots of spare bench space, consider preparing everything inside before hand, then cooking and serving outside. If you’re floor plan allows it, you could also put in a window from the kitchen that opens out onto a bench outside to easily transport food and utensils between kitchens.

Including an island or bar top in your outdoor kitchen is a fantastic idea. It not only gives you extra bench and serving space, it also allows guests to sit and talk to you while you’re cooking. It also provides a barrier to prevent all your guests ending up in the kitchen and in your way. Alternatively, you could use a long table with bar stools. This gives you a little more flexibility as it is easy to move.

If you are including fridges for beverages, consider placing them at the end of the kitchen so that guests aren’t getting in your way while trying to get a drink. You could also install a chiller separate from the fridge, the chiller being at the end of the kitchen and the fridge being closer to the prep and cooking areas. This way, you have access to the fridge while cooking, lots of fridge space can be freed up by not having drinks in there, and guests have easy access to drinks in the chiller. If you want to go all out you could install a chilled water tap and beer taps at the end of the kitchen to serve the same purpose.

Keep your outdoor kitchen close to your outdoor living space or seating area. This will allow the cook to interact with guests and makes it easy for people to grab seconds!
