How to Incorporate Farmhouse Style into your Kitchen

Farmhouse style kitchens are not only for the farm. See how to bring this welcoming kitchen vibe into your home – no matter where you live.

Laid back. Warm and inviting with a real homely feel. Farmhouse style kitchens are all this and more. With appropriate styling you can achieve the same vibe into just about any type of kitchen.

Following are some simple ways to achieve a farmhouse style kitchen vibe of your own.

Shelving

A golden rule for any farmhouse style kitchen is you must include open shelving.

Fix shelving to a wall or transform some existing kitchen cabinetry into shelving by removing a door. If space permits you could add some free-standing shelves on the floor. For a real talking point add a gorgeous freestanding wooden cart for stylish décor items or even a portable bar!

To complete the farmhouse style kitchen look, deck your shelves with chinaware, glassware, fruit bowls, jars; or whatever you please really. Remember to keep it functional to avoid wasting precious storage space.

Accessorise

Farmhouse style kitchens are typically full of trinkets, bits and bobs. But, modern farmhouse style sees more functional pieces replacing the traditional statues of roosters and cows.

Marble

Marble works wonders in modern farmhouse style kitchens. Go for a marble cake stand, cutting board or cheese board to showcase on the benchtop. These items are both functional and decorative kitchen accessories.

Wood

Wood is a must for any farmhouse style kitchen, new or old. From bases like timber kitchen cabinetry and wooden flooring, you can also add wooden accessories to blend in seamlessly with other natural elements such as stone and slate.

Consider recycled or upcycled pieces of furniture, a chunky butcher’s block, wooden shelves with wrought iron fixtures, and smaller accessories like fruit bowls and wooden mug holder trees.

Copper

Copper is another perfect addition for a farmhouse-styled kitchen. Copper kettles, copper mugs, or something more subtle like copper fittings on pendant lighting.

Plants and herbs

Fresh herbs and beautiful green potted plants are perfect accessories in modern farmhouse style kitchens. Herbs in planters on benchtops or herbs brimming from mason jars on open shelving. Add a plant in a copper pot to an empty corner of the kitchen to finish the look.

Breakfast nook

Breakfast nooks are ideal for adding some rustic farmhouse charm to your kitchen area. A versatile addition, a breakfast nook provides extra seating for visitors as well as a homework area for the kids, or space to escape and read the newspaper.

To make a farmhouse style kitchen breakfast nook just find space in your kitchen or adjacent area which is not being capitalised on. Add some wooden bench seats along the wall or chairs to form a perimeter. The table can be fixed, flip down, or folded and removed entirely when not in use. Include plenty of natural textiles for cushions and linen.

A breakfast nook brings a homely farmhouse vibe to a space that would typically be under-used.
