Unique Kitchen Island Ideas

Unique Kitchen Island Ideas

A kitchen island is a handy thing to have in any kitchen. It can be used for preparation, serving food or to add extra seats. The kitchen island if often the focus point of many kitchens. Here is our list of unique kitchen islands that will wow your guests!

The Butchers Block is great as an island bench because you can use as a preparation bench. This is great for someone who cooks a lot as you can use as a chopping board and cut up ingredients wherever you want on the island. You do have to make sure you look after your butchers block though, it has to be oiled and it’s also a good idea to scrape it down every now and then to keep bacteria away.

Another unique island bench is the Work Table. These are not only great because they usually have extra storage such as towel rails, but they can also be converted into a mobile island. Just add wheels and off you go! These work-style benches can usually be bought at a low cost, just have a look at garage or factory sales and if your lucky you’ll find a bargain. If you’re not into repurposing old furniture, but love this idea, you could get your work bench island made new by a professional.

Console Tables are great especially in a kitchen that is tight on space. The typical console comes with shallow drawers up the top and a shelf down the bottom which is a great open storage space. Console tables can come in many styles to suit all kitchen types.

Buffets are another item that can be repurposed into a kitchen island. You will probably be able to find many in antique stores. They can look a bit dated but with a fresh coat of paint they come up beautifully.

Industrial Tables are becoming a big trend everywhere. These can be expensive, but if you are willing to do a bit of DIY you could save some dollars. You can add colour my painting the metal parts of it, or leave the natural colour for a more neutral look.

Or you could always Create Your Own! The sky is the limit, you could use old shelving units, a wine barrel, painted tin ceiling tiles or reclaimed wood. If you have a specific island style in mind this may be the best way to go. Rather than spending countless hours looking for the perfect bench, create it yourself!

There are many options when it comes to island benches,  and whether you decide to repurpose an old piece, go with a more common style or create and build one from scratch, Harrington Kitchens are here to help.
