When choosing your kitchen bench top, there are many factors to take into consideration. The main things you have to consider are style, durability, maintenance and cost. Granite is very durable and is scratch and chip resistant. This is a good bench top for someone who cooks a lot and wants their bench top to last. Granite isn’t affected by heat so you can place hot items directly on the bench. Because granite is porous, it will need to be sealed regularly, usually once a year.
Quartz Surfacing is the most durable stone bench top. It has the look of natural stone, but is more resistant to staining as it is less porous. Quartz surfacing is low maintenance and hygienic and there are many brands that manufacture this product. Brands include Quantum Quartz, Caesarstone and Essa Stone. This bench top is also great for someone who loves to cook, but it is suggested that hot items and dishes aren’t placed directly onto the bench top.
Laminate is the most traditional bench top. It isn’t as durable as stone or quartz surfacing, and isn’t as resistant to heat and stains. Laminate is highly versatile in that it does come in a wide variety of textures and colours. Some laminate brands are Formica, Laminex and Wilsonart.
Solid Timber bench tops are generally constructed from narrower timber strips bonded together. Timber bench tops are a little harder to maintain as you have to keep up with oiling them regularly, and they cannot take any heat directly on to the bench. But if looked after they can last a long time. If it is showing signs of wear and tear, it can be sanded back and re-oiled to look as good as new. If looked after, timber bench tops are a truly beautiful option.
