Kitchen Design: 5 Things to Remember when Renovating

Kitchen Design: 5 Things to Remember when Renovating

As the majority of home activities take place in the kitchen, it is important to plan a practical kitchen design. Along with functionality, a great kitchen must also be comfortable, stylish and blend in with the rest of your home. Read on to find our top five things to remember when planning your kitchen renovation.

1. Lighting
The kitchen is one room where good lighting is a must, especially for safety reasons. Your kitchen needs a combination of light sources which are not only task lighting for workspaces and cook tops but also decorative lighting to create ambience and dimmable lighting above dining areas.

2. Clean-up Location
As your kitchen bin collects household rubbish as well as food scraps from the kitchen, it is best to place it at in an easily accessible position in the kitchen, closest to the entry or at the end of a kitchen island. While you are thinking about your bin system, also remember to include a recycling section to sort your trash efficiently.

3. Powerpoints
Add multiple power points along your kitchen splashback and inside your appliance storage cabinets so you will have access to electricity whenever you need it. As we tend to have more than just a toaster and kettle in the kitchen, include outlets for your coffee machine, food processors and blenders so you can use many of your appliances at the same time.

4. Dishwasher Placement
Place your dishwasher next to your sink to avoid dripping kitchenware across your kitchen when packing your dishwasher after rinsing items in the sink. It is also great for plumbing purposes to position your dishwasher near the taps so you can connect them to the drain. Also ensure it is not located next to a wall so you can access your dishwasher from both sides when it is open.

5. Space between Benchtops
Lastly, remember to allow space between each bench top area for opening drawers, cabinets and appliances such as the oven and dishwasher. Allow room for you to move comfortably around and stand in front of these appliances when they are open.

I love your tip to consider where you are putting your power points. My old house had way too few power points and it drove me crazy. Extra power points make your kitchen a lot more versatile and convenient.

I think that lighting is one of the most overlooked things when it comes to renovations. The same can be said about the placement of appliances! You can make your kitchen so much more efficient with your placement.
